
Vitamin B was once thought of as a single vitamin very similar to vitamin C and vitamin D. Modern science, though, has broken the B complex vitamin into many parts, the most popular of which are included in Vitamin B Complex: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12.

B6 – Also known as pyridoxine, this nutrient helps the body produce red blood cells. Another function it performs is increasing the health of the cardiovascular system by slowing the body's production of amino acids. A deficiency can lead to a form of anemia. B7 – Its scientific name is biotin. This nutrient is most important in infants. A lack of it can cause stunted growth and some brain disfunction. For the most part, there are no signs or studies that indicate that adults lacking this nutrient show any side effects. It does, however, have the reputation being able to strengthen nails and hair. As a result, it is frequently used in cosmetic products.
B9 – The clinical name for this vitamin is folic acid. Of all the B vitamins, this is one of the most active and essential for bodily function. The body needs it to both create and repair DNA, which is the building block of life itself. It is also a key ingredient of cell growth and division in infancy and pregnancy. The required amounts by the body of this nutrient are a balancing act. Studies have shown that a diet high in natural folic acid may decrease the risk of many cancers. B12 – Clinically known as cobalamin, this nutrient has gained much reputation in recent years as having the ability to promote weight loss. Although this vitamin has been proven to give energy boosts and help those who receive it feel better, there is not enough scientific data available to prove that it helps with weight loss. Nonetheless, weight loss clinics continue to give B12 injections along with dieting advice, and claim it gives great results. If it actually achieves the promised results of increasing the body's metabolism, then weight loss would be a welcomed natural byproduct.
